14questions on refrigerant and refrigeration oil testing, answered as precisely as the facts allow. Where the honest answer is “no” or “not published”, that is what you will find here rather than a paragraph that walks around it.

01The specification

What the standard actually says

The two questions that decide whether a result makes sense to you before you read it.

What is AHRI 700, and what does it measure?

AHRI Standard 700 is the specification a fluorocarbon refrigerant has to meet to be sold as reclaimed. It is the document behind the phrase “meets AHRI 700”, and a verification analysis is judged against it.

It specifies 7 characteristics: air and other non-condensables, water, all other volatile impurities, high boiling residue, particulates and solids, acidity, chloride. 6 of the 7 are liquid-phase determinations.

Air and other non-condensables is the single vapour-phase measurement, and it is specified on a basis of % by volume @ 25.0 °C — which is why it needs its own vapour draw rather than being read off the liquid sample.

What the standard does not contain is a purity minimum. The characteristic is all other volatile impurities, maximum 0.5% by weight. “99.5% minimum” is the arithmetic complement of that figure, and it is only meaningful for a single-component refrigerant.

Limits are per refrigerant rather than one generic column. R-123 takes 20 ppm water and R-11 takes 20, where R-22 takes 10, and neither of the first two is subject to the non-condensables determination at all — the standard does not require it for fluids whose normal boiling point sits at or above room temperature. A single generic column applied to everything fails conforming material and passes non-conforming material, in both directions.

3 editions are in circulation — 40 CFR 82 subpart F, Appendix A; AHRI 700-2019; AHRI 700-2024 — and they do not agree on everything, so which edition a result was judged against is part of the result.

Why does my blend fail when the purity number looks fine?

Because purity is not the test for a blend. Each named component carries its own two-sided composition window, and the verdict is whether every component sits inside its window — plus a cap of 0.5% by weight on anything that is not a named component.

Worked through: R-410A allows R-32 from 48.5 to 50.5% by weight. A cylinder assaying 47.9% R-32 is 99.5% pure and fails, because the composition is outside the window and purity was never the question.

The windows are not symmetric tolerances either. R-410A and R-507A are both nominally 50/50 and both are skewed, in opposite directions: R-410A allows R-32 from 48.5 to 50.5 while R-507A allows R-143a from 48.5 to 50.5. Anything implemented as a nominal value plus or minus a tolerance is wrong for both.

Physically, the usual causes are fractionation during recovery, topping off with something that is not the same blend, and a leak that removes one component preferentially. None of those move a purity figure much. All of them move the composition, which is what decides the result.

02The certification

What it covers, and what it does not

Three answers, two of which are limits rather than claims. Anyone deciding whether this laboratory fits their specification should not have to ask for those two.

What does “AHRI Certified® Refrigerant Testing Laboratory” mean, and how do I verify it?

It is a certification issued under AHRI's Refrigerant Testing Laboratory programme, and it applies to refrigerant testing. AMALINA Technologies, Inc. holds it, and is the only laboratory in California that does.

You verify it the way anyone else does, without asking us: open AHRI's public directory, select the Refrigerant Testing Laboratories programme, and search the participant name. A listing reads Active or it does not.

You will not find a certificate number printed anywhere on this site. A number typed onto a web page is a claim about a document the reader cannot see, and a lapsed number looks exactly like a live one. The register is the authority and it is one click away, so that is where we send you.

Does that certification cover oil analysis?

No. The programme certifies refrigerant testing. It has no oil scope at all.

Refrigeration oil analysis runs here as a separate service, and it stands on its method and on the report it produces rather than on a credential borrowed from the other bench. If a sentence anywhere on this site reads as though the certification covers oil, it is an error and we want to hear about it.

What third-party credentials does the laboratory hold?

One, and it is the one in the register: AHRI Certified® Refrigerant Testing Laboratory certification, held by AMALINA Technologies, Inc.. It applies to refrigerant testing.

That is the complete list. There is no second programme standing behind it, and on the oil side there is no third-party credential at all — refrigeration oil analysis stands on its method and on the report it produces. The register is the check on all of this: what it shows is what the laboratory has.

If a specification, an insurer or a customer has told you to use a laboratory holding a particular programme, name the programme when you ask and you will get a direct yes or no before you ship, rather than after. Establishing that at the start of a job costs nothing; establishing it once the cylinder has moved costs a job.

03Taking and sending a sample

Getting the sample right

A result can only ever be as good as what arrived in the cylinder. Most disputed numbers are decided here rather than on the bench.

How much sample do you need?

About 350 g of refrigerant, drawn from the Liquid valve into a sample cylinder rated to 400 psi, evacuated to 50 microns or better and filled to 75–80% of capacity.

The fill window is not arbitrary in either direction. Under-fill and there is not enough material left once the determinations that consume sample have run. Over-fill and you have a liquid-full cylinder with nowhere to expand, which is a safety problem before it is an analytical one.

For low-pressure refrigerant, the source tank may be pressurised through the Vapor valve with dry nitrogen.

Oil goes into a borosilicate graduated glass sample bottle, degassed before it is sealed. POE and Solest oils absorb moisture quickly, even in a sealed bottle. Send samples promptly.

Why liquid phase, and not vapour?

Because a blend in a cylinder is two phases with two different compositions. The more volatile component is over-represented in the vapour, so a vapour draw reports a composition that is not the composition of the material in the tank — and for a blend, composition is the verdict.

That is why the procedure says to draw from the Liquid valve, and it is why 6 of the 7 characteristics in the standard are liquid-phase determinations. Moisture, high-boiling residue and acidity all sit in the liquid; a vapour draw leaves them behind in your tank and reports a cleaner sample than you have.

The non-condensables measurement is defined at 25.0 °C on a vapour-phase sample, so the source temperature at the time of sampling is part of the record.

A single-component refrigerant does not fractionate the same way, but the procedure does not change for it. The contaminant determinations are still liquid-phase, so the sample is still drawn liquid.

Can I send a sample from a burnout?

Yes. Say so when you register it.

It changes nothing about the limits — AHRI 700 has no burnout column, and the material is judged against the same figures as any other sample of that refrigerant. What it changes is what the result is for. On the refrigerant side, acidity and chloride are where a burnout shows itself. On the oil side, a burnout is the case condition analysis was built for, and the oil will usually tell you more than the refrigerant does.

One thing worth stating at registration: whether you are asking if the material meets reclaim specification, or asking whether the charge is fit to stay in the machine. Those are different questions. AHRI 700 answers the first one.

Do you test oil and refrigerant from the same system?

Yes, and on a system in trouble it is worth doing. They are two services, two samples, two kits and two reports — refrigerant into a pressure-rated cylinder drawn liquid, oil into a glass bottle — but they are two views of one event. Acid in the oil and acid in the refrigerant are the same chemistry seen twice, and moisture shows in both.

Register them against the same system and the same job so they reach the bench as a pair rather than as two unrelated samples.

One scope note, because it matters more than it sounds: only the refrigerant testing sits under the AHRI Certified® Refrigerant Testing Laboratory certification. The oil analysis does not, and we do not present it as though it did.

Where do I send it, and can I drop it off?

Either. Samples reach the laboratory by carrier or by hand, at 13564 E. Imperial Hwy, Unit D, Santa Fe Springs, CA 90670.

Hand delivery is what being in Santa Fe Springs is worth to a contractor working the basin: a cylinder drawn in the morning can be at the laboratory the same day, rather than in a carrier's network.

One caution for anyone working from older paperwork: check the address printed on the form in your truck against the one above before you set off. Earlier Amalina documents give a different building.

04Results, money and us

The questions asked last and worried about first

Two of these have no published answer, and the honest thing is to say which two rather than fill the space.

What is your turnaround?

Quoted per job. There is no turnaround figure published on this site, and that is deliberate.

A published turnaround is a promise that has to survive a bad week, and refrigerant and oil do not behave the same way. Tell us the matrix, the number of samples and whether the job is time-critical, and you will get a figure for your job instead of a figure for a website.

If a date is a condition of the work — a batch you cannot release, an audit, a machine down — say so before you ship rather than after, and it will be answered directly.

What does it cost?

Quoted per service. There is no price list on this site.

Refrigerant and oil price differently, and sample volume, expedited handling and kit supply all move the number, so a single figure on a page would be wrong for most of the people reading it. Send the detail — refrigerant or oil, how many samples, how often — and you will get a quote.

We would rather quote you than publish a number we might have to walk back.

Who owns my results?

You do. A report is issued to the party that registered the sample, and it is that party's document — to keep, to forward to a customer, to attach to a batch record, or to put in front of an auditor.

The question underneath it is usually not ownership, it is who else sees the number. This laboratory shares ownership with a refrigerant reclaimer, so that is a reasonable thing to establish before you ship, and it is answered on the independence page rather than in a sentence here.

Two adjacent questions have no published answer yet, and we would rather say so than invent one: how long a sample is retained after the test, and what happens to the material afterwards. If either bears on your job — a retained aliquot for a re-test, or the return of the refrigerant — ask before you send it.

What is your relationship with Chiller Services?

Common ownership. Adjacent unit, same building. Chiller Services Refrigerant Recovery Reclamation, LLC is a refrigerant reclaimer; AMALINA Technologies, Inc. is the laboratory. Two companies, two units of one building.

It matters because of the direction the money runs. The purity a laboratory reports is an input to the price a reclaimer pays, so if you are selling recovered refrigerant to Chiller Services, the laboratory reporting the number is affiliated with the buyer. Anyone can assemble that sentence from public records, which is why we write it ourselves.

That is a structural conflict, and a structural conflict is answered with controls you can read rather than with an assurance that there is nothing to worry about. What those controls are, and where they stop, is set out on the independence page rather than summarised into a sentence here.

A question that is not here is worth asking rather than assuming. Anything about retention, disposition of the sample after testing, or how a result is delivered gets answered by a person, in writing, before you ship.
